Can an app check your blood pressure?
Short answer
A phone app alone is not a substitute for a blood pressure monitor. For a home reading, use a validated upper-arm cuff. Companion apps such as OMRON connect and Withings can sync, store and share readings from compatible monitors, but the external device performs the measurement.
Which app should you try?
OMRON connect
Consider OMRON connect if you have a compatible OMRON upper-arm monitor and want readings synced into an app.
Withings
Consider Withings if you use a compatible Withings blood pressure monitor and want its readings and trends in the same health app.

What you get with each app
OMRON connect
Omron Healthcare, Inc.
Consider OMRON connect if you have a compatible OMRON upper-arm monitor and want readings synced into an app.
Useful features
Keep in mind: The app displays readings from compatible hardware; it does not measure blood pressure with the phone alone. Confirm the exact monitor is supported before buying it.
Withings
Withings
Consider Withings if you use a compatible Withings blood pressure monitor and want its readings and trends in the same health app.
Useful features
Keep in mind: The app requires compatible hardware for a blood pressure measurement, and some analysis or coaching features require Withings+.
Use a cuff, not a phone-only reading
The NHS describes blood pressure testing with an inflatable cuff and a monitor. For home checks, use a validated upper-arm device with the correct cuff size and follow its instructions. Treat any phone-only app claiming to calculate blood pressure without suitable external hardware cautiously.
The app is useful after the measurement
A companion app can sync readings from a compatible monitor, show trends and create reports to discuss with a healthcare professional. Compatibility is brand- and model-specific, so check the manufacturer's current support list before choosing an app or device.
Do not diagnose yourself from an app
Measurement technique and repeated readings matter. Follow the schedule given by your GP or other healthcare professional, and seek medical advice if you are worried about a reading or have new symptoms. An app's chart or category is not a diagnosis.
